There are many types of survey questions researchers can utilize in their questionnaires, each providing a unique benefit. There's scale-based questions which help understand the intensity of certain metrics,
multiple-choice questions that allow participants to select several options that resonate with them, and ranking questions that ask respondents to order elements in a particular way.

Open-ends are another type of survey question – where participants must input a response to a prompt, in their own words. Open-ends are a great way to add more detail to quantitative questionnaires, and can provide rich context that quantitative questions alone can't capture. What are open-ends in a survey?

"Open-ends" refer to question types that allow respondents to provide free-form, qualitative answers, rather than selecting from predefined options (like multiple-choice, Likert scales, or yes/no questions). They provide a blank text box (as shown below) for respondents to type their thoughts, opinions, explanations, or suggestions in their own words.

Common examples of open-ended questions include:

  • "What are your overall thoughts on [product/service]?"

  • "Please elaborate on why you chose [option]?"

  • "What improvements would you suggest for [experience]?"

  • "Is there anything else you would like to add?"

These questions are helpful for gathering rich, nuanced data that quantitative questions often miss, providing deeper insights into respondent motivations, perceptions, and experiences.

How can you leverage open-ends in analysis?

To leverage open-ends in analysis, researchers have to transform the unstructured text data into actionable insights. quantilope's platform does this automatically, making open-ended text just as easy to leverage as quantitative survey metrics.
